Chapter Twenty-three

Jericho paced in the waiting room like a father awaiting the news of their newborn child. She prayed as she walked that the mother, who she’d dubbed Valerie, was going to be strong enough to make it through the whelping and would be able to feed her babies.

Just thinking about Valerie dying was tearing Jericho apart. She could not stop the tears that started flowing. It had been more than an hour with no word as to how the dogs were doing.

Chrissy found Jericho sitting with her head in her hands, crying. She knelt in front of Jericho and put her arms around her.

After several minutes, Chrissy started whispering, “Shhh. Everything is going to be okay.”

“I just can’t take the thought of the mother dying and leaving those poor puppies all alone,” Jericho sobbed.

They were cheek to cheek, and Chrissy was gently rubbing her face against Jericho’s. She placed a gentle kiss next to Jericho’s ear and said, “The mom’s going to be okay.”

“Are you sure?” Jericho whimpered, relishing the feel of Chrissy’s face against hers.

“Yes,” Chrissy whispered and kissed Jericho’s cheek again, this time closer to her lips. She planted another soft kiss next to Jericho’s eye, tasting the salty tears. “The puppies will need our help, but they are all going to be okay.”

“Promise?” Jericho whispered, not wanting to break the spell of the gentle kisses Chrissy continued to plant on Jericho’s cheek.

Chrissy took Jericho’s face in her hands and looked into her eyes. “I can’t promise everything will be perfect, but things are looking good.”

Jericho nodded, her eyes locked with Chrissy’s. Chrissy’s eyes lowered to Jericho’s mouth before she leaned in and kissed Jericho on the lips. It was a soft kiss, after which Chrissy pulled back slightly, and then kissed her again, this time a little harder and for a little longer.

Sounds coming from around them made them pull apart. They stared into each other’s eyes until they heard the door of the vet’s surgery room open. Chrissy stood and pulled Jericho to her feet. Jericho wiped her tears on the sleeve of her shirt before they both turned to face Carol.

Carol looked from one to the other, cleared her throat, and said, “Uhm, Harriet wants you guys to come help feed the puppies.”

“Okay,” Chrissy replied.

“I’m going to wash my face, and then I’ll be right there,” Jericho explained.

After Jericho left to go to the restroom, Carol looked at Chrissy with raised eyebrows. Chrissy grinned and said, “What? She was upset because she thought the mother was going to die.”

“Well, it looks like you made her feel better,” Carol observed with a knowing chuckle, then turned and led Chrissy back to the surgery room.
